For this year’s edition of The Armory Show, Company Gallery is pleased to make its first appearance at the fair, presenting Jesús Hilario-Reyes in the Platform section. Curated by Jovanna Venegas, the presentation centers on Salt Tolerance, 2026, a sculpture comprising a hybrid tangle of red mangrove roots and maritime foghorns.

Hilario-Reyes works primarily through sculpture at the intersection of sonic performance, land installation, and expanded cinema. His practice is guided by a sustained interest in fugitivity, particularly as it relates to Black subjecthood. The work reckons with the spectrum of visibility, considering the carcerality of light and the freedom of darkness.Within this framework, the mangrove functions as a site of ungovernable wildness. Situated at the edge of islands and on the threshold of the open ocean, the mangrove forest represents an “edge world” that adapts to and makes use of incoming flotsam. Its tangled roots afford concealment, while the embedded fugitivity of mangrove terrain has historically offered refuge for maroons and migrants. Salt Tolerance imbues this biomorphic form with a cryptic spiritual distress call.
